The following is a statement from TNM President Daniel Miller on the tragic shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.
I am heartbroken at the devastating loss of life at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. I have withheld comment on the events until more information was available, unlike the political class who immediately took to the airwaves to politicize the deaths of 26 Texans. There are no words that can comfort at a time like this. Men, women, and children, who were exercising their natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences, were gunned down by a deranged degenerate bent on the taking of human life. In the end, his rampage was brought to an end by two heroic Texans who were exercising their right to keep and bear arms.
It is now clear that the gunman should have been legally prohibited from owning a firearm. The current law on the books did not fail. Instead the failure lies squarely at the feet of the Federal bureaucrats who, through incompetence or inaction, did not add this violent abuser into the system that would have prevented the legal purchase of a firearm. It is also clear that no law on the books will prevent a murderous heart from seeking to fulfill its darkest desires. It is up to each of us to defend ourselves and one another.
We mourn with the people of Sutherland Springs and the families of those whose lives were taken. We stand ready to protect one another and send a clear message to those who would seek to harm the innocent in the future.
