During a July 11, 2016 meeting of the Southeast Texas Tea Party in Beaumont, District 21 Representative Dade Phelan revealed to a group of his constituents that he was willing to vote in favor of allowing a referendum on Texas independence.
“I’ll tell you this right now,” Representative Phelan said, “like any issue that my voters in southeast Texas are for, if I hear from my voters back home that they want me to vote in favor of it, I’ll do it!”
Phelan was quick to note that he himself does not favor independence as a solution to federal government overreach, preferring solutions such as nullification, but he was clear that if a sizable amount of his constituents wanted the opportunity to decide this issue via the ballot box, he would support it.
This is a welcome development and could signal a possible shift in the attitudes of at least some Texas law makers. Though not overtly promoting the idea of #Texit themselves, they might be willing to acquiesce to the will of the Texas people, if their voice is loud and large enough.
